Attention Deficit Disorder and Inflammation

In recent years, attention deficit disorder (ADD) has received national attention because it’s become an epidemic in the US, afflicting approximately 3-5% of our children.

Although there are 6 different types of ADD, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), they’re grouped together here as ADD.

One factor common to all people with ADD is a deficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Drugs like Ritalin, which increase dopamine production, are commonly prescribed to bring the condition under control.

Since high-dose fish oil also increases dopamine levels, it makes sense it helps alleviate ADD, without the need for drugs.

Research shows certain areas of the brain have an altered blood flow.

And, the severity of ADD is directly linked to the level of silent inflammation in the blood, as measured by the silent inflammation profile.

Children with ADD have a much higher silent inflammation profile than children who don’t.

Therefore, the problem of ADD is much more complicated than simply the lack of dopamine in the brain.

Currently, the treatment of ADD has focused on drugs, like Ritalin, to increase the levels of dopamine.

But what if this lack of dopamine were a secondary symptom of increased silent inflammation?

It’s also known from animal experiments long-chain omega-3 fatty acids increase dopamine levels and the number of dopamine receptors in the brain.

This means ADD may be more closely connected to a nutritional deficiency (lack of dietary EPA and DHA) than any underlying medical or psychological condition.

This correlates well with animal studies showing after 3 generations of deficient omega-3 fatty acid intake significant behavioral and cognitive defects appear in their offspring.

Today’s children represent the third generation of Americans who’ve been exposed to a dramatic decrease of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in their diet.

Studies show small amounts of EPA and DHA given to children with ADD resulted in improved behavior.

In pilot studies of children with ADD, they often needed up to 15 grams fish oil per day to bring their silent inflammation profile to a measurement of 2.

Once they reach this level, their behavioral disorders become controlled to the same extent as by taking Ritalin.

But unlike Ritalin, which treats only the symptoms of ADD, high-dose fish oil appears to treat the underlying cause – silent inflammation.

The reason children with ADD need so much fish oil is they probably have the same accelerated metabolism of omega-3 fatty acids as found in people with Alzheimer’s.

Recent data has confirmed this hypothesis in children with ADD.

So, how do you get your child to take such a high dose of fish oil on a daily basis?

Simple.

Make them the Big Brain Shake.

They’ll need 2 shakes a day to get the necessary amount of EPA and DHA to sufficiently reduce their silent inflammation profile.

By using the Big Brain Shakes, you also get the additional benefit of stabilizing blood glucose levels.

One major caution:  Once you reduce the fish oil intake, the silent inflammation profile will probably increase again, and all the behavioral benefits will quickly erode.
