Can Fish Oil Reverse Type 2 Diabetes?
Published research shows the Zone Diet has superior effects on type 2 diabetics compared to the usual dietary recommendations of the ADA.
But, unfortunately, this study didn’t include fish oil.
After all, diabetes is virtually absent in Greenland Eskimos, who eat the most fish oil of anyone in the world.
Unfortunately, studies on fish oil alone and type 2 diabetes have had mixed results.
None of these studies, however, looked at the combination of the Zone Diet and fish oil.
In theory, the combination of the 2 should be very successful.
This hypothesis was tested several years ago with Princeton Medical Resources, an HMO in San Antonio.
George Rapier, the owner of the HMO, wanted to cut health care expenses.
Since type 2 diabetics generate the highest medical costs because of long-term complications, anything to alleviate the condition goes right to the HMO’s bottom line.
A year before this study, Rapier brought in dietary educators trained by the ADA to advise 400 of his more than 4,000 diabetics.
These people followed the recommendations provided by the ADA educators.
After a year, Rapier found health costs for these 400 patients had increased by another $1 million!
Needless to say, he was driven to find a more effective solution.
He wanted a very simple program because most of his diabetics had only a 6th-grade education and English wasn’t their first language.
Using only the hand-eye method and 1.6 grams a day of fish oil, a simple dietary education program was put together for 68 type 2 diabetics.
After 6 weeks, the results were amazing.
Not only did every type 2 diabetes measurement decrease, but they decreased by extraordinary amounts.
The 2 measurements changing the most were those markers (insulin and the TG/HDL ratio) used to define the Anti-Inflammation Zone.
Although the values were still far from optimal after 6 weeks, their declines were equal to any drug.
Other markers of diabetes were similarly reduced.
Finally, these diabetics lost excess body fat, which is exceptionally difficult because of excess insulin.
In addition, the decline in each of those blood values had a very high degree of statistical significance.
Statistical significance is an indication of how likely it is you’ll get the same results if you repeat the same experiment.
The lower the number, the more likely the results can be repeated again.
In this case, the statistics showed if the same dietary experiment were done 10,000 times, you’d get the same results 9,999 times.
These results could’ve been even better if higher levels of fish oil (about 5 grams of EPA and DHA per day) were used.
This is because insulin resistance appears to be resolved by an increase in TNF (tumor necrosis factor) levels.
The one proven way to decrease the secretion of TNF in your body is through the use of high-dose fish oil.
This in turn decreases insulin resistance, which in turn lowers insulin levels.
Once insulin levels are lowered, your body can finally access its own stored body fat for energy.
Basically, it takes fat to burn fat, especially if the fat can reduce the release of TNF.
That’s what high-dose fish oil can do.
In summary, if you want to reduce excess body fat or reverse type 2 diabetes, you have to reduce silent inflammation.
The most important dietary tool you have for this is high-dose fish oil.
The Zone Diet will also work, but at a slower pace.
Combine the 2 and you have a powerful dietary approach to reverse the twin epidemics threatening to destroy our health care system – obesity and diabetes.
