Cancer And Silent Inflammation

Although we have a far greater risk of dying from heart disease than cancer, we’re usually far more fearful of cancer.

After spending some $30 billion on the war against cancer, our government hasn’t made any headway into finding a reliable cure for the disease or a surefire way to prevent it.

With all the hype, main treatments for cancer are still the big 3:  burn, cut, or poison.

Although these rather barbaric approaches can extend your life span, they’re not an ideal prescription for a good quality of life.

Researchers, though, are now pinpointing ways to reduce cancer risk.

They know eating more fruits and vegetables protects against cancer.

And they know those who take anti-inflammatory drugs on a regular basis have a reduced risk.

Animal studies also suggest high-dose fish oil appears to slow or reverse a wide variety of tumors.

What clues could these observations provide to help in the prevention of cancer?

The answer may lie in the reversal of silent inflammation.

For years we’ve known diets rich in fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of cancer.

It’s always been thought it was because of the phytochemicals in these carbohydrates.

But there are thousands of phytochemicals, so how do you know which one to choose?

Pharmaceutical companies have tried to isolate these nutrients and put them into pills to prevent cancer.

They tried and failed with vitamins, as studies found an actual increase in lung tumors from the use of beta-carotene.

That’s because these phytochemicals are primarily antioxidants, and therefore don’t have a lot of potential to reduce silent inflammation.

The same data, however, can be interpreted in another way.

By eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, you’re replacing high glycemic-load carbohydrates with low glycemic-load carbohydrates.

This decreases the excess production of insulin.

Decreased insulin production reduces not only the accumulation of excess body fat, but also reduces the production of AA.

In essence, by eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, you get a powerful bonus – namely, decreased AA production.

This means decreased silent inflammation.

If inflammation is the underlying cause of the progression of cancer, then anti-inflammatory drugs should decrease the risk of cancer.

And that’s exactly what you find:  in colon, breast, ovarian, and other cancers, the more anti-inflammatory drugs you take, the lower your incidence of cancer.

If anti-inflammatory drugs reduce the risk of cancer, what about anti-inflammatory fish oil?

Many animal studies have shown high-dose fish oil does a remarkable job of slowing the rate of tumor growth.

Researchers have known for years giving animals high levels of pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids (like corn oil) would significantly increase their cancer death rates when they had tumor cells implanted in their bodies.

On the other hand, when these animals were given fish oil supplementation, their implanted tumors dramatically decreased in size, and the animals had longer life spans.

This makes perfect sense.

Those getting the pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids were generating more “bad” eicosanoids, while those getting fish oil were making more “good” eicosanoids.

In cancer, the eicosanoid balance can mean the difference between life and death.

Another anticancer benefit with fish oil is its ability to change the genetics of the cancer cell itself.

It turns out high levels of fish oil can dramatically increase certain proteins that dampen the metastatic potential of prostate cancer cells.

This begins to explain why studies have found eating fish helps slow the metastatic spread of prostate cancer in Americans, and also why the Japanese (who eat huge amounts of fish) have very low rates of prostate cancer mortality.
