Finding the Keys to the Kingdom
Then, right about this time, Jillian hit the big 3-0.
Funny thing about turning 30, it really makes you think – about the possibility of having kids, about the desire to live longer and healthier.
Up until that point – and this might seem a little funny – she’d always assumed she was going to die young.
When she got there, she realized she wasn’t going to get the easy way out.
And she didn’t want it!
She wanted to have a long life, to grow up and age gracefully.
The journey wasn’t just about being thin anymore; it was about health and longevity, too.
She didn’t want just a skinny body, but a healthy, happy, and long life as well.
At this point, a good friend and client of hers had been seeing an endocrinologist.
She got on the phone with this doctor to discuss the health and wellness of her client, which was totally routine for her.
She’d pretty much worked with the entire medical community of Los Angeles, seen or talked to every dietitian, sports medicine doctor, biochemist, chiropractor, podiatrist . . . you name it.
But this was her first endocrinologist.
While talking to this doctor, she finally understood why her client wasn’t seeing results.
All the missing pieces of the puzzle were right in front of her.
Her client had hypothyroidism, which is why they couldn’t get off her last 15 pounds.
She was also suffering from PCOS, which is linked to type 2 diabetes, which was also making her metabolism function at a snail’s pace.
She knew her client had a slow metabolism, but now she knew why.
And with his help, they created a diet plan to change it for her.
Incredible, she thought.
Eventually she put herself at the endocrinologist’s mercy.
She got tested for everything from cholesterol to heavy-metal poisoning.
She still remembers the day she was sitting in his office when he strolled in with her results.
He smiled, handed her a piece of paper, and, before she had a chance to read it, said, “How long have you been hypothyroid?”
The paper was full of numbers in the “abnormal range” column.
“And your testosterone is really low. Have you ever been on Accutane?”
She couldn’t catch her breath.
“Do you know what ‘estrogen-dominant’ means?”
At that point, she almost felt dizzy.
All of a sudden, she had a completely plausible explanation for all the symptoms she had ignored or denied for so many years – her facial pigmentation, her peaks and troughs of energy, and, yes, those 15 instant pounds.
The uniting factor was her hormones.
Her fat-storing hormones, like cortisol, were through the roof.
Her fat-burning youth hormones, like growth hormone and DHEA, were plunging.
She had more estrogen floating around than her body knew what to do with.
Her entire endocrine system was entirely whacked out – and with it, her metabolism.
This realization was one of the greatest awakenings of her career.
And from that moment on, she was unstoppable.
She was totally new to this world, but she saw a way to fix things and make them right.
