Mental Skills Needed for Weight Loss

*Imagery/Visualization:  Imagining yourself doing an activity or looking a certain way.

*Relaxation:  Taking a “time out” for yourself to relax your body and your mind.

*Refocusing:  Ignoring distractions and getting back to what you need or want to do.

*Reframing:  Thinking about things in a new way.  Developing a healthy new attitude or mindset.

*Goal-setting:  Setting reasonable, attainable goals with timelines to achieve them.

Positive mental attitude – this can make all the difference, whatever your goals!

Especially with weight loss being your primary concern, be realistic.  We all have a basic shape, bone structure, and height.  We’re not all meant to be skinny model types or big macho hunks.  Not everything can be changed about yourself.  Set realistic goals.  Love your body the way it is now, and every step along the way!

Mind chatter.  Who’s in charge here anyway?

Keep yourself positive and motivated.  Maybe it’s time to have a talk with your inner voice.  You know, the one that likes to keep reminding you that:

*”You can’t do this.  Who do you think you’re kidding?”

*”You have so much weight to lose, it’s impossible.”

*”You’ve tried other plans and they never worked.  Give up.  This is just the way you are.  Just learn to live with it.”

*”You have no self-control and no self-discipline, so why bother trying?”

It’s time to tell this inner voice to “Shape up or ship out”.

When your inner voice starts to chatter, acknowledge it and then refocus on your goal.  You can do anything you put your mind to and you know it.  You’ve done it before with other things in your life.  Successful athletes and achievers are positive self-talkers.  They change their inner voice to one that only speaks positively, giving encouragement and confidence.  Positive self-talk takes practice, often lots and lots of practice.  The first step is to catch yourself every time you think a negative thought and consciously change it to a positive one.  This is a great time to use prayer or affirmations.  Follow positive self-talk or affirmations with positive imagery or visualization.  Imagine yourself successfully doing whatever you want.  This reinforces the new way of thinking.  The more you practice positive self-talk, the easier it gets, until it becomes a natural way of thinking for you.  We get what we think about, so we need to focus on our desired outcome rather than our inner voice.
