Nature Will Always Win in the End

When you look at nature, you can’t help but see cycles, and it’s the same with economic history.

There are cycles of growth and cycles of recession.

We’re always shocked and surprised when we can’t sustain perpetual growth.

But is the measure of our success really growth?

Or is it security?

Instead of using the gross domestic product to measure the health of our economy, perhaps we should be looking at the things defining our strength and security.

Things like government efficiency, employment, debt ratios, longevity, education levels, environmental cleanliness, infant mortality, and poverty levels seem like much better indicators of health and success than just the revenue we generate.

Any good businessperson knows gross doesn’t mean much unless you know what the net is – and net can only take you so far without knowing what your debt is and if you can handle it.

We’re in the throes of psychological as well as economic changes.

This kind of epic change is hard.

But how we respond will define us for the next 100 or even 1,000 years.

It’s comforting to hang out with friends, eat delicious meals made of locally grown foods, and think we’re changing the world.

And sometimes it does create change.

But true change is often a hard and painful process – a dirty job.

People get hurt, jobs are lost, and people feel adrift for a while.

However, we all have to change, not just the government.

Salvaging our global food supply, restoring the soil’s ability to isolate carbon, and removing all the toxic chemicals from the marketplace is a job of epic proportions.

But we can do it.

The government needs to do its part, too.

Setting up a brand new bureaucracy isn’t the answer.

It’s time to do the right things.

And the right things for the government to do are to reward and create incentives for those who are keeping people and the planet healthy and shut down or tax the hell out of those who are polluting it.

We like to believe the government is something separate from us, some mythical “other” causing all our problems.

But the truth is, the government is us.

It’s made up of people, people like you and me.

People who have strong opinions and convictions.

People who are driven by self-interest.

We’re lucky we still live in a democracy.

We’re still independent and free.

But we owe it to our children to put aside some of our pet concerns and get involved for the greater good.

We are in the final death throes of our industrial paradigm that puts business before people and the planet and considers nature an enemy to be conquered.

We humans created the problem.

And only we can solve it.

We have to.

Otherwise, nature will solve it for us.
