Testing for Silent Inflammation
Wellness is dependent on the levels of inflammation and especially silent inflammation in your body.
If you have screaming pain or an existing chronic disease, you know, of course, you aren’t well.
Having type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, or Alzheimer’s means you have inflammation.
Having an autoimmune condition like multiple sclerosis or lupus also means inflammation is present.
Any chronic pain condition – those ending with “itis” – means you have inflammation in the area causing you pain.
But silent inflammation is different.
It’s ongoing inflammation below the perception of pain.
Until recently there was no way to test for it.
Since there now is, you can find out if you have it and begin a program to keep it at bay.
You can also have periodic clinical testing to find out if your efforts have been successful.
The first step you need to take is to determine whether you have silent inflammation and, if so, the extent of it.
Silent inflammation is hard to detect, and it’s impossible to determine by sight alone.
You might have it if you’re obese, or you might not.
In fact, you can be overweight and still be well if your insulin levels are in the healthy range (good news for millions of Americans).
On the flip side, you might have significant silent inflammation if you’re at your ideal weight.
So how can you figure all this out?
A clinical assessment of your blood to determine your degree of silent inflammation is the only way.
Only recently have blood tests been developed to measure silent inflammation.
These tests look for specific biomarkers.
These biomarkers are the best indication you need to start taking immediate action because real trouble is brewing.
Silent Inflammation Profile
This is the gold standard test for silent inflammation.
It measures the balance of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids and anti-inflammatory eicosanoids.
These are also the hormones ultimately controlling inflammation.
It’s this ratio in your blood that provides the most precise marker of silent inflammation.
The higher your Silent Inflammation Profile, the more silent inflammation you have and the further you are from wellness.
Fasting Insulin Levels
Although the Silent Inflammation Profile is the gold standard, measuring your degree of insulin resistance is the next best biomarker.
Insulin resistance is the underlying cause of obesity and type 2 diabetes and is characterized by excess levels of insulin in your bloodstream.
The best clinical blood test for determining the extent of insulin resistance is your fasting insulin level.
The higher your insulin levels, the more inflammation your body is producing.
Fasting insulin blood tests are relatively routine.
They’re used to screen for not only diabetes but also heart disease.
Silent Inflammation Profile – Good = 3; Ideal = 1.5
Fasting Insulin (uIU/mL) – Good = 10; Ideal = 5
Secondary biomarkers for silent inflammation include your triglyceride/HDL ratio and your CRP level.
Triglyceride/HDL – Good = 2; Ideal = less than 1
CRP – Good = 2; Ideal = less than 1
Knowledge is power when it comes to silent inflammation.
Silent inflammation is insidious and the greatest threat to your wellness.
Keep in mind wellness isn’t a multiple choice test: you have to keep both insulin and eicosanoids within their appropriate ranges.
Only then can you be assured of being in a state of wellness.
Don’t make wellness a guessing game.
Take the time to invest in the medical tests to determine exactly where you stand.
If you find you aren’t quite there, keep making the adjustments to your diet and lifestyle until your blood says for sure you’re moving toward a state of wellness.
