The Fish Oil Solution
Fortunately, you don’t have to choose between increased fish oil toxicity or doing nothing.
The solution to the dilemma was discovered a few years ago with the development of new manufacturing techniques leading to the development of ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrates.
EPA and DHA are the key omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil.
EPA has anti-inflammatory effects, and DHA provides neurological benefits.
Without going into details, it takes about 100 gallons of health food-grade fish oil to make 1 gallon of an ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrate.
How can you know if a fish oil supplement is made of these ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrates?
Well, the first thing is don’t trust the advertising copy.
The label or product’s website might promise the fish oil product you’re purchasing is “mercury-free,” “pharmaceutical-grade,” or “toxin-free,” but you really have no way of knowing if their marketing hype is true.
Your best bet is to go to an independent source with no financial interest in the product who has the technology to test for these contaminants.
There are 2 organizations currently providing this kind of testing.
One is the International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS) program administered by the University of Guelph in Canada.
The other is Friend of the Sea, which certifies sustainable seafood.
IFOS tests and posts levels of toxins in fish oil samples submitted by product manufacturers.
If the lot number on your fish oil isn’t listed on the IFOS site or, if your fish oil company doesn’t get their product from Friend of the Sea, then you should think twice about buying it.
We strongly recommend doing a little research before purchasing any fish oil product regardless of the advertising claims.
A home method to determine if your fish oil might be an ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrate is to place the product in your freezer.
Pour a few teaspoonfuls of liquid into a cup or cut a few capsules open and put the liquid into the freezer for 5 hours.
If it freezes rock-solid, then it’s not an ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrate.
A true EPA/DHA concentrate would be liquid or at most a little mushy.
This still doesn’t mean it has very low levels of contaminants, but at least it’s a good start.
Once you find a fish oil supplement composed of ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrates, you’ll probably find it costs more than other fish oil supplements.
Don’t be fooled by the price of the bottle.
What you’re paying for is the actual amount of EPA and DHA in the bottle.
If you make a quick calculation, you’ll often find the actual cost per gram of the EPA and DHA in a less refined product is often greater than the cost of the same amounts of EPA and DHA in an ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrate (especially the liquid oil).
Part of the reason is the soft gelatin capsules cost much more than the inexpensive health-food grade fish oil in them.
So why isn’t everyone selling ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrates?
The answer is there isn’t that much of it around, although supplies are continually growing.
