The Ins and Outs of Fizz

When you want a break from plain water, carbonated varieties can add a nice change without additional calories.

Just be sure to choose wisely and avoid blends containing added juice and sugar.

Mineral water, as the name suggests, contains minerals and sometimes gases and is sourced from wells or springs.

It’s naturally effervescent and low-calorie.

Club soda, also called soda water or seltzer water, is water injected with carbon dioxide to create fizz.

Tonic water is charged with carbon dioxide and flavored with fruit extracts, sugar, and small amounts of bitter quinine.

Because of the flavorings, it has about 80 calories per serving and is high in carbohydrates.

Recipe of the Day:  Sparkling Agua Fresca

Any melon can be substituted for the watermelon, and any soft fruit or berry can replace the strawberries, so feel free to tailor this recipe to your liking.

This drink also makes a nice base for a cocktail – just add 1 ounce of vodka or rum.

Makes 6 (1-cup) servings

6 cups seedless watermelon cubes

1 cup strawberries, halved

1 tablespoon lime juice

1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger

2 cups chilled water or sparkling water

Fresh mint or basil leaves, for garnish

*Use as many organic ingredients as possible.

Combine the watermelon, strawberries, lime juice, and ginger in a blender or food processor and puree until smooth.

Strain.

There will be about 4 cups.

Pour into a heavy glass pitcher, cover with plastic wrap, and chill for at least 2 hours.

Just before serving, stir in the chilled water.

Garnish with mint or basil leaves.

Note:  The agua fresca will keep for 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator.

Per serving:  50 calories, 0 g total fat (0 g saturated), 0 mg cholesterol, 5 mg sodium, 17 g total carbohydrates (15 g sugars), 1 g fiber, 1 g protein.
