Tips For Taking High-Dose Fish Oil

Even if you believe us about the importance of high-dose fish oil, taking enough is a different matter.

Most people don’t like the fish aftertaste or stomach upset.

These effects are mainly due to the fatty acids found in health-food-grade fish oils.

Once you start taking ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrates, you’ll see a dramatic reduction in these side effects, because the fatty acids causing these problems are removed in the refining process.

Here are some other tips for taking fish oil.

1.  Take fish oil capsules with food.

Eating food causes the secretion of digestive enzymes that break down the fish oil for better absorption.

2.  Take fish oil capsules at night before you go to bed, along with a healthy snack.

3.  Split your capsules throughout the day.

Unlike vitamins and minerals, which last only a few hours in your blood, fatty acids from fish oil last several days in your blood.

So you can take your dose all at once if that’s easier, or you can divide it up.

You’ll maintain stable blood levels either way.

4.  If you have to take more than 4 capsules a day, consider switching to a liquid fish oil.

You’ll also save money, since you don’t pay for the gelatin capsules.

Since ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrates don’t freeze, you should keep them in the freezer.

This not only preserves them by protecting them from oxidation, but also makes the liquid taste a lot better.

You’re probably thinking any type of liquid fish oil probably has a taste similar to cod liver oil, the world’s most disgusting food.

That’s not the case with ultra-refined EPA/DHA concentrate, because most of the offending taste chemicals are removed with the toxins.

But we’ll be honest, it’s still fish oil.

The next tips make liquid fish oil easier to take.

5.  Mix liquid fish oil in 2 ounces of orange juice.

The citric acid in the orange juice dampens the taste receptors in your mouth, so you taste very little fish oil.

Because even this small amount of orange juice isn’t very diet-friendly, a better choice would be sucking on a piece of orange, lemon, or lime before you take the fish oil.

6.  Have a Big Brain Shake.

This recipe is for people with neurological conditions like attention deficit disorder and Alzheimer’s who need very high levels of EPA/DHA in order to reduce their SIP (silent inflammation profile).

All you need is a blender and the following ingredients:

1 cup 2% milk

15-20 grams protein powder

1 to 1-1/2 cups thawed frozen berries

Put all the ingredients into a blender, add up to a tablespoon of liquid fish oil (which contains 7.5 grams of EPA/DHA), and blend.

You can add some ice to make it more like a milkshake.

The key to this shake is the milk globules in the 2% milk.

They’re an ideal delivery system to maximize fish oil absorption with virtually no taste.

The protein powder and the berries help to absorb the fish oil, plus make a very quick meal.

Can You Take Too Much Fish Oil?

Of course you can, but not if you’re monitoring your SIP periodically.

If your SIP falls below 1, take less fish oil.

Usually, you’d have to be taking more than 7.5 grams of EPA/DHA to get below 1.

At an SIP of 0.5 or less, your risk of suffering a hemorrhagic stroke is increased.

Again, to get to this potentially dangerous level, you’d have to be taking extremely high doses of fish oil.

You should take the least amount of fish oil that gets you to the anti-inflammation zone.

To ensure your SIP is in the appropriate range, we recommend getting a blood test at least once a year.

Keep in mind, within 2 weeks after stopping fish oil, your SIP will climb back up to its original level.

In summary, if you have only 15 seconds a day you’re willing to commit to control silent inflammation, then high-dose fish oil will be your best option.

The more you follow the Zone Diet, the less high-dose fish oil you’ll need.

The choice is yours.
